Mourning Doves

This was made during a “15 prints in 30 days” challenge wherein I gave myself the general theme of birds native to Montérégie, Québec.

Growing up, my family always joked that mourning doves were so named because they weren’t bright enough to get out of the road when a car came round; their doleful cries, we said, were because they were always mourning their flattened loved ones. Despite our dark sense of humour and (probably ill-deserved) scorn, I’ve always liked mourning doves. They’re round and fluffy and are always cuddling up to one another. I couldn’t make this series of birds without them.

I later used the design on hand-pulled greeting cards. They were sold at several shops in Montréal including the McCord Museum boutique.
