I made both sets of these hornbills during different livestreams. I wanted to explore the principles of colour and light, particularly as taught by James Gurney (creator of Dinotopia and one of my artist mentors).

I ended up being extremely satisfied with how they all turned out. I like the balance between realism and illustrative qualities and enjoyed using purple as a measurement of shadow in both birds.

The photo is of me chilling with some hornbills at the Bali Bird Park in Indonesia! They were shockingly heavy - I honestly don’t know how the aerodynamics work for these guys.
