Blue Jay

Seed Horunavi Japanese rubber carving block

3” x 3”

2017

This was made during a “15 prints in 30 days” challenge wherein I gave myself the general theme of birds native to Montérégie, Québec.

Being part of the corvid family, Blue Jays are incredibly intelligent. There were always at least 2-3 families of them that would grow up on our property when I was young. I’d watch the awkward baby jays learn to fly from our cedars and, come late summer, gain independence. The next year, those babies would be the ones building nests in our yard.

I later used the design on both hand-pulled greeting cards and cork coasters. They were sold at several shops in Montréal including the McCord Museum boutique.
